Let me explain why my little fan boy friends are Completely wrong.
OpenSource yes anybody can program software for this thing meaning it’s all free. You don’t have to deal with the itunes app store. And you can program anything yourself. You want a googlemaps facebook mashup? It will exist in 1 month instead of waiting for it to never happen on an iphone.
True multithreading. What does that mean? You can run things in the background you can listen to mp3 while surfing the net on it and when you get a phone call it pauses your mp3s you speak than after you go back to your listening.
What apple folk fail to realize the dream represents the future of communication devices  the iphone was the beginning but a whole unrestrained user driven phone platform is where it’s at.
The app store had a chance to do this but the didn’t simply because it’s still controled by apple. So guess what you have to oblige them.
This device in it’s self isn’t remarkable but the os is amazing. Guess what this OS will be on any phone.
Having coded a little with google’s libraries it’s awesome these guys know how to code.  What they did for the Internet they are doing to phones. And it will work because google doesn’t give a shit about hardware or having a closed system they get their revenue stream from you using their shit which we all know you little apple boys with your gmail accounts is awesome.
And the phone is simply the G1. Not T-Mobile G1: HTC Dream Android Phone.
it’s like calling the iphone. AT&T Iphone: Apple Iphone OSX Phone.
let’s have some real talk.
Apple started this thing. But This phone represents the future. How is releasing crippleware smart? When has that ever been good? Is DRM good? Next you will say it’s good that Itunes music is a pain in the ass to move to non apple devices even though YOU own it.
Hey I love the iphone but I don’t need to suck on the job’s teet when a superior product is out there.
I still love you goubeaux.

T-Mobile G1: Full Details of the HTC Dream Android Phone
you know what’s wrong with this thing. let’s start with the “name” of it. The T-Mobile G1: HTC Dream Android Phone. SERIOUSLY???????? i am into technology, follow blogs etc… i still can’t figure out what the deal is with this thing. though, after watching a walkthrough video, i realize it’s totally an iphone. sure there are some differences, amazon mp3 store instead of itunes store, full physical keyboard (for those who can’t stop crying about a qwerty pad), etc. but basically, this thing is an iphone with a horrible name. How in the world will the average user figure out what this thing is and understand what it can do for them?? apple was smart, they released a stripped down phone, named everything very succinctly, and made sure even the most rudimentary user could understand what the phone CAN do and reassured them of how easy it would be TO do those things. slowly, apple has added features and capabilities. i am not saying that google won’t accomplish some awesome things with this device, but i am not sure they can do it with the approachability and class of apple.

ok ok ok.  wait a sec.  this is sounds great, from a guy who started a computer science degree.  if you want this product to survive and do well, you should probably hope that those who don’t have your computer skills and thorough understanding of open source technology (like aunt susie) can grasp the basics of this phone and sort out 1) what it can do 2) how to get it (it’s mad confusing as of now) 3) why “open” apps should MEAN anything to users who will get their wallets out (you and your computer programmer friends buying this won’t be enough).
also since it’s so CONVENIENTLY name just “G1”, i did a little googling (yeah, the search engine made by the guys who MAKE THE OS ON THE PHONE).. try it yourself!!!
search “G1”
then “iphone”
tell me how that goes.
i guess i get it, if you want a phone / os that only the elite computer users can use.  you have the right to that “awesomeness”.  i just feel like a little control from a company with a vision is worth it to make sure stuff just WORKS.  i don’t need to be standing in line for starbucks “troubleshooting” my open source apps. why aren’t they playing nice together.  oh shit, why did that app i just downloaded give me a blue screen of death, oh, right, it’s a virus…
your example of “multi-threading” is fully functional on the iphone, you can listen to music and take calls (music starts back up again when you hang up) you can surf the internet, even text message while talking on the phone.  ??????
the issue of DRM is not strictly an apple issue.  they do offer non-drm music.  much of that is handed down from the industries who supply the material in question.  look  i’m all about getting rid of DRM, but just because this phone advocates the use of the Amazon music store, doesn’t make it a great phone, i have JUST as much ability to use the amazon music store to purchase music for my iphone as you would with the G1. no one is FORCED to use the itunes store for music.  apps are another issue, and for all the crashing/virus/shitty programming reasons listed above, i am glad apple controls it.  stuff just works.
hey, i have love for the super-users out there, i like the idea of OS freedoms, faster app creation etc.  i just don’t feel like t-mobile / google have packaged a phone that can storm the market like it needs to.  in fact, i can only hope they get their act together so you can have your G1, and not see it tank because of lack of adoption!  that would be a sad sad day if you had to stroll in to your local apple store and grab a phone that just WORKS.
